Vinyl Mona Lisa aims for record

A Mona Lisa art project that its makers claim is the largest reproduction in the world of Da Vinci's masterpiece has gone on display at a shopping centre.

Dozens of adults from community groups and youngsters from Wrexham schools coloured 82 vinyl tiles to make the paint-by-numbers portrait.

It is on show at Eagles Meadow, and will be used to raise money for the children's hospice charity Hope House.

At 17.5m across, and covering 240 sqm, it is some 50 times the original.

The massive Mona is on display on a specially built plinth at the shopping centre.

The artwork was put together by artist Katy Webster, who graduated with a first class honours degree in fine art from North Wales School of Art and Design at Wrexham's Glyndŵr University in 2009.

Pupils from Victoria Primary School and members of the Haulfan Centre, a community centre for people with disabilities, were involved in the project.

Unlike admirers of the original, shoppers in Wrexham will be able to touch this Mona Lisa.
