Speed Demon Photography

In the last leg of the Crestock Photo Contest 2007 we received some truly amazing pictures among the well over 600 submissions. With emotions ranging from pure adrenaline, blinding speed and motion blur to more subtle interpretations of this round's theme, the photographers have certainly put some serious effort into this. Perhaps no wonder when the first prize was the awesome Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II?

When you get past saying “Wow…” you may start thinking about how in the world the photographer managed to make this photo. What do you have to do to get the combination of that looong arch of water coupled with the glass standing at an almost perfect 45 degree angle? I could imagine that the photographer just had someone throw heaps of water-filled drinking glasses across a table and hoping for one of them to hit just the right spot in the right way, but I suspect the truth is much more complex.

A comment to the caption of "Flying Free by vikasmal"
you said it would make an amazing HDR composition, however HDR requires the photographer to make a series of photos, thus there will be a time lapse and as a result the birds will be smeared and it would look really bad. Sooo no it wouldn't make an amazing HDR composition, only in theory. Just a heads up

To capture that while it still has the original shape of the balloon to me would be a harder shot than the glass of water even.
If anyone remembers the Salvador Dali photo of the flying cats (which you can see at the Dali Museum in St Pete, FL). Supposedly he took multiple attempts at that one too just having someone throw water and making the cats jump till he got that right.

A greyhound killed my puppy
By deadpup on Wednesday, 6 June 2007 8:19 PM
Retired racing greyhounds are usually very docile, but NEVER allow them to get near any small and fluffy animal. A leashed greyhound confused my leashed puppy with a rabbit and killed it on sight just a few months ago. Even years after adoption, greyhounds (which are sight-trained to recognize a bunny) will act on their instinct and attack and kill something very small and fluffy.

That's no muzzle on that dog...muzzles keep the mouth shut and all greyhounds race with them on! That dog (who's head appears photoshopped if you ask me) clearly has a contraption holding his mouth open and face in that position. Poor fake photo...or really good one depicting animal abuse.

The Greyhound is what a Speed Demon should be
By Renato on Thursday, 7 June 2007 1:11 AM
Some photos here are astonishing, the children one, the Water baloon one as well are great. But it don't think they would win the Greyhound photo, it is so well portrayed that it actually scares you.

I only have one objection to all of this marvelous photos, the thing is, if this is a contest to win a fabulous camera why do i think (and see) that almost every good photo we see here is obtained from one of those fabulous cameras? The thing is, i love photography and i would love to have pictures like those (which i try) but i know that i couldn't do this kind of High Speed with my Canon S1 iS. I feel that this kind of contests don't give any chance to those who don't have the chance of producing such work.

P.S.: I am not taking any of the credit that these wonderful photographers have, because in fact they are really great photos!
the Birds
By Luke on Thursday, 7 June 2007 1:27 AM
Issues of technical feasibility aside (HDR is near impossible with action shots), I like the birds as silhouettes. Think about it- if you could see the detail on the birds the image would be way too busy.

On closer inspection, I'm wondering if this image is already doctored to reveal detail in both the sunset and the mosque. Exposing the sunset correctly should leave the mosque completely underexposed...

Greyhound at top speed
By Mika ZC Dragon Fly on Thursday, 7 June 2007 5:13 PM
When a greyhound is at speed (40 mph or so), the wind can blow the floppy skin around its mouth back, resulting in a ferocious-looking snarl. In actuality, all the greyhound is thinking is "gotta run, gotta run, get the lure, gotta run."

Greyhounds have thinner skin than many other breeds. Because of this, greyhounds are muzzled when they race--all those bare teeth and the opportunity for accidental tooth contact with another dog's thin skin could result in incidental bleeding.

Racing muzzles vary, but some are very simple steel wire contraptions. See http://www.greyhoundmuzzles.com/images/wireMuzzles.jpg for one possible configuration.
Greyhound mouth
By Passerby on Thursday, 7 June 2007 5:29 PM
Well, since the point of a muzzle is to keep the dogs from biting each other, I would guess that the contraption in the dog's mouth keeps it open so that it can breathe fully, while still not biting down.

Seems grotesque. A lot of the photos are taken in non-western nations, so perhaps their methods look diiferent (and apparently more cruel in this case) than what some of us are used to.

And god the commentary was horrible.

By Leah Cole, DVM on Thursday, 7 June 2007 5:49 PM
The recent comment is correct, the wind can blow their lips & cheeks back & give the snarling appearance. Coursing dogs also wear a racing-type blanket. This dog was not in a race, in this country, at least. Our muzzles are full size.
The comments about their wonderful dispositions are spot-on. They do make the most delightfyl pets when they retire! The puppy man have seriously annoyed the Greyhound... puppies can do that.
Muzzle? Weird Mouth and Eye Opening Apparatus?
By Mika ZC Dragon Fly on Thursday, 7 June 2007 7:03 PM
I'm a greyhound, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

If I had to guess, the head of the greyhound picture was photoshopped (poorly) to remove as much as possible of a steel wire muzzle.

In my racing career, I have never heard of anyone using contraption to keep a greyhound mouth open--I most certainly wouldn't let anyone put one in my mouth. If you can't keep your mouth open to breathe, you shouldn't be racing!

The point being to remove their ability to bite one another, while still having full air flow. It's not that they are unable to open their own mouths, this thing prevents them from closing or biting.

And if they could photoshop away a full muzzle, which I don't believe they did, why wouldn't they remove all traces of the muzzle?

And to the vet who basically said the puppy had it coming, real nice for someone in your position to say without further knowledge.
Sprinting Greyhound
By EcoShow on Thursday, 7 June 2007 9:39 PM
Well, my greyhound picture certainly got people talking. Just to clarify some statements. All racing dogs have a lightweight harness over the head to prevent them from biting each other, especially at the end of the race when they are still very exited and looking for the "hare" that they just chased. It fit over the head and is fastened behind the head. It is specially designed not to hurt the dogs. Its purpose is definitely not to keep their mouths open – why would anyone want to do that? In the photo the mouth of the dog is gaping to allow for maximum breathing during the sprint - he requires masses of oxygen to supply to its muscles. I can assure you there is nothing altered in the image – the harness is of very thin wire and thus not that clearly visible in the picture. The rules state that a photographer may be asked to provide the original for verification. That I can do.

I do not necessarily condone dog racing, but I do find it fascinating and very challenging to photograph. My observation thus far was that the majority of dogs enjoy racing. You can see the anticipation on their faces waiting for their turn. At the end of the race their handlers need to catch them or they will go for another round and often they do if they are not caught in time.

When they are not racing these dogs are very docile and friendly. The expression on this particular dogs face is not of aggression – it is simply a result of sheer determination and physical exertion.

Just to follow up on my previous post and to put people at ease about possible cruelty to the animal in my photo. Take a look at the greyhound images on the site below. There you can clearly see the harness over the head of each animal. It is a mandatory item in all official dog races the world over and is there for the protection of the dogs and not to harm them in any way. Look at all the dogs while sprinting: their mouth wide open for breathing.

The greyhound
By Jill Touchette on Thursday, 7 June 2007 9:56 PM
The racing greyhound is not scary..it is not snarling.. it is moving at 45 mph and the wind is blowing its lips open. I have three greyhounds of my own and they look like that sometimes when the wind catches them just right when they're in a full sprint. Greyhounds are very calm, gentle dogs that make great pets.

I actually work at a greyhound track and what EcoShow says is true- most of the dogs get hyped up and do tend to still be excited at the end of the race..and are hard to catch (i should know as thats my job) the muzzles cause no harm and are made in different sizes so a dog will have the best one fitted and a removed after the race...they are lovely creatures...but this face demonstrates this dog doing what he does best..running...which he also loves this is a great picture that shows this

this is my concern...about the image"GOING DOWN". The theme "SPEED DEMON" is a figurative speech, meaning if it is an image of people or person, it should show their love for speed or seeing a reaction that they crave for speed. In "GOING DOWN" it captured an expression of fear and clearly doesn't show that the girl enjoys the ride..this is not funny, I pity the girl..do you want your child to be seen like this???? have a heart, pls..........................

THe think in the dog's mouth is...
By Wendi Friesen on Tuesday, 12 June 2007 8:50 PM
(yes, you can find everything on the net)

It is: A wire, leather or plastic devise, with a white tip, which is fitted over the greyhound's mouth and jaws and used as an aid in a close photo finish.

Greyhound Note
By Willy on Tuesday, 26 June 2007 6:39 AM
To clear a couple things up about greys (have one myself and I will have at least one for the rest of my life, guaranteed)...

SOME greys are not small-animal safe. These greys are not vicious, they just have strong prey drives. If you ever adopt one, any adoption group worth it's weight will have tested the grey and will let you know ahead of time whether or not they are small animal safe.

MOST are fine with small animals. Mine has absolutely no prey drive at all... cats, small dogs, even rabbits and squirrels that cross our path on walks, it doesn't even register with him.

Either way, if you ever adopt one, you WON'T regret it!

Race Dog.....
By BScott on Thursday, 28 June 2007 7:13 AM
It appears that there is a metal device that keeps the dogs jaw open as it runs......allowing more oxygen into it's lungs. I guess they do what they can to win.......the owners anyway......and the gamblers.

Race Dog
By TJ's greyhounds on Thursday, 12 July 2007 8:40 PM
For those of you that did not know, the contraption on the dog is a wire racing muzzle. They use them in Europe. Be assured this is not holding his mouth open. They work the same as the plastic ones we use in the U.S. If you have ever see a greyhound running without a muzzle this is the way they look. I know. I have 6 racers myself. They are quite gentle but they run with their mouth open. They can get more air to their lungs through their mouth than they can through their nose.

Great Photos
By Daniel on Wednesday, 14 November 2007 9:41 PM
I’m really impressed by all of the images. I am a professional an orange county photographer who specializes in wildlife photos but I enjoy looking at the images others capture. I laughed pretty hard at that poor girl going downhill on the roller coaster. I also though the picture of that snarling racing dog really captured a cool moment. Photographs are always fun and they captures sides of us we don’t always want to admit are there but that we find fascinating too!
Some stupid comments...
By Nick on Friday, 30 November 2007 3:51 AM
Come on everyone, quite it with the greyhound!
I had a good time watching the awesome pictures and now I'm pissed reading all the lousy comments about the greyhound dog. Seriously, what do we f**cking care about his eventual muzzle...
greyhound on drugs
By Dr. Who on Wednesday, 19 December 2007 9:24 AM
That greyhound is on drugs. And if you look at the size and musculature of the neck and chest it's really not too deep to figure out what type at least some of the drugs are.

By the way they get these photos from video. It's not so complex. They play the video, rewind etc, and stop where they want and select what portion of the video to print as a pic.

Much a like a drug induced performance, it's not so spectacular when you know how it's done. More of a no brainer.

By gudmund on Friday, 21 December 2007 8:49 AM
I don't know a thing about performance enhancing drugs, so I can only assume that you're an expert in the field since you can tell just by looking at the greyhound what drugs it has been given.

I do, however, know a thing or two about photography, and the suggestion that you can get a high quality, high resolution photo like this just by rewinding a piece of video and printing a still from it is, not to put too fine a point on it, just silly.
